A Coronation Street star has warned her character wonât be seen on the cobbles âfor a long timeâ
as she prepares to leave the country. Coronation Street landlady Jenny Connor (played by Sally Ann Matthews)
sparked alarm amongst die-hard fans of the ITV soap when she hinted sheâd never be returning.
She first made an appearance in 1986 and has worked for the show on and off ever since â but could her time as Jenny finally be coming to an end?
On a late night Instagram Live story, Sally revealed that sheâd quit the country, taking multiple holidays in Cyprus over a period of just a few weeks, saying her plan for now is to just âdo nowtâ. The 53-year-old added that she might âat some point get a jobâ, after confessing she hadnât filmed on the cobbles in âagesâ.
Rumours swept the internet that she was leaving the soap for good â but a rep for Coronation Street reportedly confirmed that she has a safe future on the show. Express.co.uk has approached a representative for further comment.
Sally had begun by telling fans that she was âparticularly quietâ in the work department, and joking that she had âa million years offâ. As fans listened, glued to their seats in shock, she explained: âIâve got like a million years off, so I chose to go on an aeroplane. Iâve been to Cyprus twice in the past five weeks and we landed last night and we came back.â
She added that she planned to make a third getaway just a few days later, revealing that sheâd be making a dramatic departure on Saturday. âWeâre going to go off on the boat, and then Iâm going to just chill⊠and do nowt, pretty much!â she exclaimed.
Then she dropped the bombshell: âThen Iâm going to go back to Cyprus⊠and at some point I might get a job and someone might employ me, potentially.â
However, she wouldnât be drawn on whether sheâs left the show altogether, after a fan quizzed her directly.
âHave you left the street? Hmm. Hang on, next question. Youâre not going to be seeing Jenny for quite a long while, so thatâs that,â she concluded.
The ambiguous sounding reply had fans worried instantly.

Sally first joined the cobbles in the 1980s, enjoying a five year stint on the show before leaving in 1991.
She then returned for a brief period in 1993, followed by a third stint â her longest yet â in 2015.
Many actors have spoken publicly about the insecurity of their profession, explaining that it can be tough to get reliable regular work â but Jenny has been a firm favourite on the soap for almost a decade.
In recent times, storylines surrounding her relationship with step-daughter Daisy Midgeley (Charlotte Jordan), as well as her love-life struggles, have been a huge hit â but only time will tell when she might next be seen on the cobbles.
