Carla Connor may have just met her match as Betsy Swain comes to disrupt her life

in Coronation Street. The teen will start her work experience in upcoming scenes after

it was revealed she is the daughter of DS Lisa Swain.

Viewers of the ITV soap first learnt Swain had a daughter in scenes aired last month. Despite Swain being the reason Carla Connor’s friend Roy Cropper was behind bars, charged with the suspected murder of missing teen Lauren Bolton, Carla was seen being sympathetic to the stressed-out detective and mum.

Swain ended up opening up to Carla about the death of her partner Becky, also Betsy’s mum, and how their relationship was fraught, on top of her trying to get to the bottom of Lauren’s disappearance.

In return for being a sympathetic ear, despite Carla lying about her nephew Bobby Crawford’s false statement to the police about the night Lauren disappeared in a bid to help Roy, Swain encouraged the newly freed street stalwart to make amends with Carla before the Underworld boss offered Swain’s daughter some work experience.

When she gets into the factory, Carla and Fiz Dobbs are impressed with her machining skills. But it isn’t long before Carla catches Betsy texting and confiscates her phone. But who is she texting?

Meanwhile, it’s also been confirmed that the teen will turn the tables on Carla. In scenes to be aired in July, Carla comes across the group of yobs who were hassling Roy in the precinct and strides over to give them a piece of her mind. As Carla climbs into her car, one of the yobs cycles towards her and she opens her door, knocking him off his bike and sending him sprawling.

Unbeknownst to Carla, Betsy clocks the incident from across the street. Later Betsy returns to work and reveals to Carla that she saw her knock the lad off his bike and if she gives her a summer job, she won’t report her to the police.

Speaking about Betsy’s scheming and what Swain thinks of her involvement with Joel Deering, with it already seen she’s trying to blackmail him and with Carla, actress Vicky Myers told the Manchester Evening News and other press: “I think now we know what we know about Joel, I don’t think she’d care less. But seriously, I think she’d be absolutely furious because she has brought her up to know the difference between right and wrong and have morals.

“Also, the profession that she is in, it’s not that this is something new to Betsy… But also with blackmail, it’s contrived, there’s a lot of thought that goes into it and it’s ongoing. She’d want to know why, why she felt there was a need to do that, why she’s doing it…” She added: “I think she’d be really disappointed. It would start with anger and fury but I think out of all of it, she’d be so bitterly disappointed in her behaviour.”

It comes as fans continue to hold out for a romance between Swain and Carla. But recently speaking about what the future holds in terms of Carla’s love life, soap star Alison King revealed that another relationship is the last thing on Carla’s mind. “I don’t think she’s ready for another relationship at all and she’s definitely not got her eye on anybody,” she said. “I don’t think she’s thought twice about it. I think it’s the last thing on her mind.”

Vicky also said of a blossoming friendship between Carla and Swain: “She [Swain] can see a lot of herself in Carla. They are similar in many ways but they’re [also] different in many ways. She’s a powerful woman, she’s opinionated, she’s strong, she’s feisty, she’s not frightened of sharing her opinions, she’s a businesswoman but she’s also got a huge heart…”
