Another familiar face has left Coronation Street after disappearing from

Weatherfield without a word last year, leaving fans wondering if they would ever see the character again.

Weatherfield has lost another one of its most iconic residents as one Coronation Street star has called it quits.

 

Aggie Bailey actress Lorna Laidlaw has secretly quit the ITV soap, reports The Sun this Thursday, June 27, 2024, more than a year after her last appearance in the Manchester-based program.

 

The former Doctors star made her debut in the long-running drama as the Weatherfield General nurse in 2019 and was last seen roaming the cobbles during summer 2023, as she missed several important storylines for her on-screen family, the Baileys.

 

In recent months, Aggie and her husband Ed encountered severe marriage woes as his gambling addiction spiralled out of control. Aggie’s son Michael has also been wrongly arrested after he was accused of working with serial killer Stephen Reid to defraud the Underworld factory.

Aggie’s absence was explained on-screen as the character left the cobbles to look after an unwell aunt in Birmingham, with viewers expecting a return date, while nothing was mentioned about Lorna Laidlaw’s off-screen plans.

The Sun has now reported that hopes of a reconciliation have been reduced to nil, as the actress has left Coronation Street to join the cast of Channel 5 drama The Good Ship Murder, which was renewed for two more seasons and a Christmas special scheduled to air later this year.

“Lorna is a hugely talented actress and it’s a great gig to land”, a source told the publication, “the show films in beautiful Malta and the cast and crew are a close knit group so it’s a really great atmosphere to work in.”

The bombshell follows speculation from fans theorising Aggie could return to the cobbles ahead of her daughter Dee-Dee’s wedding to Joel Deering, who is keeping some dark secrets from his bride-to-be as he was responsible for Lauren Bolton’s disappearance and supposed murder. The Daily Mirror has reached out to ITV for comment.

Another Coronation Street legend, Sally Ann Matthews, sparked exit fears herself over the weekend, as she said viewers at home would not see her alter ego Jenny Connor pulling pints at the Rovers for a while – and she even teased a new job.

The actress told her fans the news during an Instagram live session as she announced she had “a million years off” and made the most of her break by jetting off abroad. “I chose to get on an aeroplane because I’m particularly quiet at work”, she explained.

“I’ve got like a million years off, so I chose to go on an areoplane. I’ve been to Cyprus twice in the past five weeks, and we landed last night and we came back”, she added.

Before teasing another trip away: “My next holiday plans are on Saturday. We’re going to go off on the boat, and then I’m going to just chill on the boat and do nowt, pretty much. And then I’m going to go back to Cyprus and do nowt. And at some point, I might get a job and someone might employ me, potentially.” Corrie bosses had then made it clear she had not taken a break from filming.
