Coronation Street’s Emrhys Cooper has revealed his chilling new role in

a new horror film, just in time for spooky season. The Rowan Cunliffe actor, 39,

plays a self-improvement guru in the ITV soap, who is currently involved in

an inheritance scam storyline, which will see his exit from the Street sealed. But away from the cobbles, Emrhys has been working on something even scarier. As he announced on Instagram, the Devon native is starring in a remake of the 1922 classic silent film, Nosferatu.

He posted a trailer for the upcoming movie, writing: “I’m thrilled to FINALLY share our film Nosferatu: A Symphony of horror, a remake of the 1922 silent film is being released on the 18th of October. It’s been an incredible journey bringing this iconic tale back to life, and I couldn’t be more honoured to star alongside the legendary @actordougjones in this dark and haunting reimagining. Excited to share the official trailer.”

Vampire movie Nosferatu has been remade multiple times since the original in 1922, including the 1979 Nosferatu the Vampyre, directed by celebrated cinematographer, Werner Herzog.

Before his new film, Emrhys, who has spent years living in the US, moved back to the UK to take up the role in ITV’s long running soap. Over the years he’s appeared in shows including Desperate Housewives, Vanity and CSI: NY. and has already been seen on screen in Corrie as smooth-talking Rowan, the charismatic leader of a group which calls itself The Autovalent Institute. His recent plot sees him arrive in Weatherfield, quickly targetting Leanne Battersby, who is vulnerable to his form of “support” after tragically losing her young son Oliver to illness three years ago.

Rowan notices Leanne’s heartache, and offers her healing using what he calls “reality coding” – which her sister Toyah immediately sees straight through.

The plotline is a strange coincidence, as Emrhys’ parents were hoodwinked by a cult years ago, who tried to separate them and take their cash. Emrhys grew up in Totnes, Devon, with his parents Christopher and Raphaela, who he says were ‘hippies’.

He previously spoke out about the experience, saying: “Growing up in Totnes, a very new-age town and a breeding hub of gurus and holistic doctors, my parents encountered quite a few Rowan-types over the years. I didn’t really understand it growing up. But as I got older and witnessed firsthand some of the dangers of these types of characters, my mother’s health was severely affected by some very dangerous advice she received, which is still incredibly upsetting to me.”

He said that his mum was told to ignore the medical advice of doctors, with terrible consequences. “My mother had a prescription for high blood pressure and a holistic doctor basically told her that he could get her off the prescription with some herbal remedy, and she had a heart attack.”

Things got worse when she continued to shun the blood pressure tablets that the GP had prescribed, secretly stockpiling them. “She promised us that she would go back on the prescription, but unfortunately she didn’t,” he says sadly. “Four years ago she had a very severe stroke, which has left her paralysed and in a nursing home. So that could have been stopped if she hadn’t listened to that advice.”
