Throughout its first five seasons, Netflix’s dramatic romance series Virgin River

has followed Mel Monroe, a nurse practitioner and midwife, through a lot of life’s twists and turns.

The show is based on the Virgin River book series by Robyn Carr, and brings viewers deep into the lives of its characters, including Mel’s own. At the end of season 4, the hit series finds Mel pregnant and excited about the future she has in store as a mom.

But season 5, which dropped 10 new episodes on the streamer on September 7, has been packed with drama and terrible tragedy. And it has been raising a lot of questions about where things stand with Mel’s pregnancy, especially given the fact that her first pregnancy ended in stillbirth.

What happens during season 5?

Season 5 shows the residents of Virgin River, California, going through a lot of tricky, heartbreaking situations, learning and growing from their struggles. Mel learns that her mom may have had an affair with someone from Virgin River—who could be her dad. And viewers also discover that Jack isn’t the father of Charmaine’s twins.

But the season culminates with massive wildfires ripping through town, destroying homes and putting lives in danger. And that’s where things start to unravel. Two more episodes are set to stream on November 30, 2023. Until then, you’ll just have to wait for more updates.

Did Mel have a miscarriage?

Sadly, yes, Mel has a miscarriage while helping to save her neighbors from wildfires. It’s truly tragic, and really sad for Mel, who already knew she was carrying a high risk pregnancy due to her first baby’s stillbirth.

“I felt like it was an important story to tell,” actress Alexandra Breckenridge, who plays Mel, told Netflix. “Not everyone gets their miracle baby. And so, talking to a friend of mine who had dealt with fertility issues, it seemed as though we were going to be talking about it in an honest way that would be appreciated by women who have experienced that. It was very hard for me, though. There was a lot of crying. It’s a really sad storyline, but in the end, I think Mel comes out of it on the other side in a better way.”

Does Mel end up having another baby?

Mel does not have another baby, and she also tells Jack that she can’t deal with the fear and potential loss that could come with another pregnancy. But… She also really, really wants to be a mom. This presents a bit of a conundrum for the couple.

Luckily, there are still five more books in the series, so if the TV show is also renewed for the final five seasons, viewers could see Mel and Jack explore surrogacy or adoption to help expand their family.

What happens after the wildfire tears through the town?

Mel learns that Tara is selling her farm after the wildfire ravaged her property, and decides she wants to buy it. She brings Jack to see it and says they should buy it together. Mel also talks about filling their future home with children, and Jack says that the place would be a great spot to get married.

Will there be a season 6?

Yup, Virgin River has already been renewed for a sixth season, according to Netflix. That’s great since, ya know, there are so many more big questions that need answering.
